Application and Fitment Tips Application and Fitment Tips
IMPORTANT!! PLEASE DO NOT apply Module Protectors over other frame protection products unless they are approved by Module since our protectors have been designed and tested to adhere directly to your frame and NOT to other other materials! We have seen issues specifically with Invisiframe which seems to have a low energy surface and does not allow the adhesive to adhere which will cause the protector to peel away from the frame.
PLEASE NOTE: Applying over other materials will void the warranty!
NOTE - VERY IMPORTANT: The bottom part of your Downtube MUST be at least 2" wide where you will apply the protector! (See image below)
Remove all old graphics and adhesive (see below).
Thoroughly clean the area where the protector will go first with soap and water to remove dirt and grime and then with rubbing alcohol - the cleaner, the better! Make sure the alcohol is dry before applying protector. Make sure you have removed all old adhesive!!
Protectors should be applied when it's warmish - above 50° minimum temperature and ideally above 65° for optimal sticking power! If it's cold out we recommend to apply your protector indoors (sure you can tell your significant other we told you to do it!) or use a hair dryer or heat gun to slightly warm up the frame and protector. Make sure not to overheat the protector or it could be damaged.
Pick a spot and make sure the protector is where you want to be for the first contact. You can use a dry erase marker or tape to make alignment marks on the frame and protector if needed.
Try not to touch the adhesive side of the protector and if possible, we recommend to wear disposable latex or similar gloves. Slowly apply the protector to the frame making sure not to allow air bubbles to get caught under the material.
Slowly apply the protector onto the tube and then firmly press the material so it adheres to the tube.
If your protector did not go on right, try heating it up just a bit and peel off and re-apply careful not to touch the adhesive with your fingers or get it dirty!
When using a heat gun, BE CAREFUL THAT YOU DON'T OVERHEAT THE MATERIAL OR TOUCH THE FRAME!!
NOTE: Printed protectors are more flexible for placement where there are more curves like the bottom bracket area. Clear protectors work better on flatter surfaces or surfaces which only curve in one direction.
You can do a dry or a wet application on the Lite Shield Protectors.
Dry Application
If you need to trim the protector, it's best to do that first. Leave the protector on the backing and trim as needed. You can sketch your pattern with a dry erase marker or a sharpie. Be careful not to trim to much off! Better to trim not enough than too much!
Clean application area with rubbing alcohol.
Remove protector from sheet.
Heat with heat gun or hair dryer until you feel the material soften a bit.
Set in place - press the middle of the protector against the frame or component first.
Pressing firmly with your thumb - rub the material as hard as possible to remove air bubbles and allow the adhesive to contact uniformly. If needed hit with a little heat again
Wet Application
Follow steps 1-4 above.
Using a spray bottle with just water in it - mist the adhesive side of the protector lightly.
Set in place - press the middle of the protector against the frame or component first.
Pressing firmly with your thumb - rub the material as hard as possible to remove air bubbles and allow the adhesive to contact uniformly.
Make sure you have worked all the water out from under the material and the edges are adhered.
It's possible to do a wet or dry application on the Heli Tape Plus as outlined above for the Lite Shield.
If you need to trim tape, it's best to do that first. Leave the protector on the backing and trim as needed. You can sketch your patter with a dry erase marker or a sharpie. Be careful not to trim to much off! Better to trim not enough than too much! It is recommended to trim any sharp corners - you can use some nail clippers to do this fast and easily!
Clean application area with rubbing alcohol.
Remove protector tape from backer.
Set in place - press the middle of the protector against the frame or component first.
Pressing firmly with your thumb - rub the material as hard as possible to remove air bubbles and allow the adhesive to contact uniformly.
Note: Frame tapes don't need to be heated since the polyurethane material is more flexible.
Paint Shield Heli Tape
Clean application area with rubbing alcohol.
Apply tape to frame directly from Roll. It helps to have a partner so one person can hold the tape and the other person can cut it to length as needed.
Once the tape is in place - press the middle of the tape against the frame or component first.
Pressing firmly with your thumb - rub the material as hard as possible towards the outside to remove air bubbles and allow the adhesive to contact uniformly.
APPLICATION TIP: trim the sharp corners after the tape is in place. If it's already adhered to the frame carefully pee away from the surface and trim with fingernail cutters.
Note: Frame tapes don't need to be heated since the polyurethane material is more flexible.
Removal of Protectors, Vinyl Graphics and and Adhesive
Removing graphics is an art acquired by experience which we are happy to share with you! Apply some heat to the graphics you're removing with a hair dryer or heat gun, this softens the material and the adhesive and makes removal much easier!
Take it from us, all the so called adhesive removal products are pretty much only worth the cans they come in! In our experience, the two best products for removing adhesive are WD-40 and 90% rubbing alcohol. Use WD-40 liberally - it works best if you don't let it soak into the rag first but rather spray it directly onto the adhesive or spray it liberally onto a rag and rub the adhesive before it soaks in. After you get most of the adhesive removed, use the rubbing alcohol to clean off the remainder and clean the WD-40 from the tubes.
IMPORTANT NOTICE - REGARDING TOUGH DOME CHAINSTAY PROTECTORS
In some cases, depending on the shape of your chainstays, the Chainstay Shield Domed Protector may peel away from your frame. To alleviate this issue, we’ve added an additional piece to the kit – an 8”x2” Lite Shield. This piece is designed to overlap the domed protector slightly to hold the edges in place with the added benefit of protecting the bottom of the chainstay.
